The mighty loess terraces of the Wachtberg hill reach almost 400 meters in altitude. From this vantage point, the city of Krems was once warned of approaching enemies (Middle High German "warten"). Due to the high altitude, Grüner Veltliner grapes ripen later than average, resulting in a wine with a cool-climate character.
