The mighty loess terraces of the Wachtberg hill reach almost 400 meters in altitude, from which the city of Krems was once warned of enemies (Middle High German "warten"). Due to the high altitude, Grüner Veltliner grapes ripen exceptionally late, resulting in a cool-climate character.
